About the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology (DBB)
With recent scientific discoveries ranging from recombinant DNA technology, enzymology, metabolic pathways,
bioinformatics, diagnostics, forensics and genetic engineering among others, biochemistry and biotechnology
disciplines have become the milestone of biological sciences. Biochemistry is based on understanding
the chemistry of fundamental biological processes at cellular and molecular level. The in-depth knowledge of
life at a molecular level, makes biochemistry stand out as the heart of much of modern biosciences research.
Biotechnology discipline, on the other hand, deals with scientific manipulation of living organisms and biological
processes to solve problems and produce useful products and services. Examples of industries using biotech products
and services include health, agriculture, transport and environment. The Department has well trained staff who are
focused on training learners with the aim of producing qualified graduates in research,
academia and entrepreneurship in the field of biochemistry and biotechnology.
